Earl's Court Painters & Decorators

Interior painting

A converted flat can retain the generous proportions of a Victorian house while working as a much smaller home. We plan its decoration around both: the ceiling and joinery that give the room its character, and the furniture, circulation and daily routines that make it liveable.

Make the room's proportions part of the scheme

Start with the relationship between wall colour, ceiling, cornice and window reveal. A high room needs a clear decision about where each finish stops; a studio benefits from considering the sleeping and living areas together. Samples should be seen beside the retained flooring and furnishings, in the room's changing light.

Examine what sits beneath the finish

The initial assessment should distinguish ordinary preparation from loose plaster, staining or joinery that needs repair. Record those matters before choosing the coating. Where historic details are present, the preparation must suit them; a crisp painted edge is achieved by respecting the moulding, rather than filling away its profile.

Arrange a workable sequence in an occupied flat

Agree which room can be released first, where belongings will go and how the next room becomes available. Protect the route through the communal entrance as well as the interior being painted. A compact mews home or upper-floor flat may have little spare storage, so deliveries and equipment need their own place in the plan.

Include the joinery deliberately

Doors, skirting, architraves and interior window surfaces should each appear in the brief. Identify retained finishes and any hardware that needs protection or careful removal. If the building is listed, changes affecting its special interest require the appropriate consent assessment, including work inside the property.

Arrange an Earl's Court repaint

A room, a staircase,
a whole elevation.

Start with the part of the property you want to change. Add who occupies it, when it can be released and whether a managing agent or freeholder needs to approve the work.
