Earl's Court Painters & Decorators

Exterior painting

On an Earl's Court terrace, an exterior repaint needs to read well from across the street and hold its detail at the entrance. We consider the existing painted stucco, porch, ironwork and timber joinery as separate surfaces within one elevation.

Retain the distinction between brick and painted detail

The area's appraisals distinguish original brickwork from stucco and other decorative elements. Coating an unpainted brick facade is a different proposal from renewing an established painted surface. The brief should mark what will be repainted and what will remain exposed, with particular care around decorative brick and gables.

Settle the permission position before preparation

Listing, conservation designation and an applicable Article 4 direction can affect the proposal. Matching maintenance and a changed colour or coating must not be treated as interchangeable. Where planning or listed-building consent is needed, including conservation-area requirements, our sister company, Hampstead Chartered Surveyors & Building Consultancy, handles that professional work under a separate appointment.

Give stucco, ironwork and joinery their own specification

Describe the preparation and coating for each material, including the treatment of failed paint and any repair that must precede it. Porches and mouldings need their profiles retained. Railings need an accessible working face. Sash windows and front doors need an agreed opening, security and drying sequence with the people using them.

Plan the elevation from pavement to parapet

Decide how upper surfaces will be reached and how the entrance, lightwell and pedestrian route will function during the work. Scaffold or other equipment affecting the public highway may need a licence and associated parking arrangements. Weather, substrate condition and the selected coating's requirements must inform the sequence, rather than a fixed repaint promise.

Arrange an Earl's Court repaint

A room, a staircase,
a whole elevation.

Start with the part of the property you want to change. Add who occupies it, when it can be released and whether a managing agent or freeholder needs to approve the work.
